Description:
  • Students will follow the lessons found on the PBS-The West website to learn how infectious diseases effected Native American populations. Students will learn how infectious diseases were introduced to Native American culture, they will compare the compare the Cholera outbreak of the 1800 to the one in 1990. Throughout this lesson, students will keep a journal of their experience and chart data using a spreadsheet application. The teacher will guide the students through the lesson plan.

    • Lambirth and Gooch(2006) states that through articulating their experience, children have control and power in the writing process because it concerns what they know and have lived; it is connected to their cultural selves.
    • Boud(2001) says the benefits of writing journals as:
      • they deepen the quality of learning, in the form of critical thinking or developing a questioning attitude
      • they enable learners to understand their own learning process
      • they enable learners to understand their own learning process
      • they increase active involvement in learning and personal ownership of learning

Tried & True or New & Innovative:

  • TT: This activity tried and true lesson. Students will follow a instructor led lesson. Along the way they will maintain a journal, write a newspaper article and collect data using a spreadsheet application. Some of the activities in this lesson will be completed as group projects, group discussions or individually by the students.
